WOMENS DAY SPECIAL NOTES



  • International women’s day – March 8
  • Women’s day was observed for the first time on February 28, 1909 in  New York.
  • March 8 was suggested by the 1910 international women’s conference.
  • 100th anniversary of international women’s day was celebrated as Women’s History Month.
  • 100th anniversary of women’s day was observed in 2011. Then, the US President Barak Obama, proclaimed March 2011 to be Women’s History Month.

  • India government celebrated women empowerment year in – 2011
  • Central women and child Development came into existence – 1986
  • Present minister of central women and child Development department- Maneka Gandhi
       
Laws related to Women Protection

  •  Sathi Prevention Act – 1987
  • Bengal Sathi Regulation Act was passed in – 1829
  • First state to introduce sathi Prevention Act – Rajasthan (1987)
  • India Government, to make an act against sathi in – 1987
  • Government implemented sathi Prevention Act all over the country in – 1988 (As Sathi Prevention Act, 1987)  

Dowry Prohibition Act
  • Dowry Prohibition Act came into force in – 1961
  • Dowry Prohibition is mentioned in Indian Penal code in the section of – 304 B , 498 A
  • Punishment against dowry is – Imprisonment for more than 7 years and maximum life imprisonment.

Domestic Violence Prohibition Act
  • Domestic Violence Prohibition Act was passed in – 2005
  • Domestic Violence Prohibition Act came into force on – 26 October 2006
  • According to this Act government has to appoint protection officers in each district.

Protection for women from sexual harassment at work place
  • The bill got the assent of the president on – 23 April 2013.
  • This act superseded the vishaka guidelines introduce by the supreme court.
  • 3 member committee is formed headed by women and power of civil code

Child Marriage Prohibition Act
  • Child Marriage Prohibition Act came into force in – 1860
  • According to child marriage prohibition amendment act 2006 child means Boys below 21 years old and girls below 18 years.
  • Special Marriage Act – 1954
  • Indian Divorce Act – 1869
  • Mternity Benefit Act – 1961
  • Medical Termination of pregnancy Act – 1971
  • Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act – 1956

ARTICLE
  • The state shall not discriminate against any citizen of india on the ground of sex – 15(1)
  • The state secure for men and women equally the right to an adequate means of livehood – 39(a)
  • The state to secure equal pay for equal work for both men and women – 39(d)
  • One third of the total number of seats to be filled by direct election in every panchayath shall be reserved for women – 243D(3)

  • The 110th and 112th constitutuinal Amednment Bill were introduced in Lok Sabha in – 2009
  • Rajya Sabha passed the women’s Reservation Bill on – 9 March 2010
  • The General Assembly declared the day for the elimination of violence against women on – 25 November 1999
